Social Media in the Sports Broadcasting World
This story will dive into why social media plays a huge role in supporting those who take part in sports journalism, specifically broadcasters, in relation to Major League Baseball. I will be providing examples as to how certain broadcasters utilize social media to connect with their followers and maintain their image. This is essential for anyone in this field because it establishes credibility and ultimately leads to how respected they are, within the world of sports journalism.
This is a tweet from the well known San Diego Padres Sports Commentator, Jesse Agler. Here, he shares the line up for the Pads v. Rangers game. Uploading information, as so, allows those who are not able to watch the game an opportunity to receive some insight and update on it. Uploading this post, in this case to the social media platform known as Twitter, is a great way for Jesse to communicate with his followers, allowing those who are not able to watch the game feel included, by receiving updates on the game.
Here we have another post uploaded to Twitter by Jesse, admiring his second home. His love for the game and the stadium allows his audience to bond over the appreciation they have collectively for the Padres and the great city of San Diego.
Social media is a great way for Jesse to also inform his followers about possible guests who will be taking part in the booth with him. As shown above, he communicates that San Diego Padres beat reporter, AJ Cassavell, will be present for a few inning of this Spring Training game.
Jesse is able to reach a whole new audience by sharing and uploading products created by other companies. To the left, you can see how he has uploaded the newest version of MLB the Show, a well known video game, to his Instagram, showcasing Fernando Tatis Jr. as the face of the game this year.
GIF of Tatis… just being Tatis!!
Here is a fun picture Jesse has uploaded to his Instagram giving his followers an up close look of the new hats being used for Spring Training this year.
Jesse Agler was interviewed by KUSI News in which discusses his new career as one of the main broadcasters for the San Diego Padres, alongside Tony Gwynn Jr. Those who follow baseball, or maybe do not all all, are able to receive information about new the changes happening in the booth.
In conclusion, social media is an incredibly useful tool for broadcasters to use for exposure and allows followers to build a connection with them. Jesse Agler is a great example of one who utilizes these platforms to engage and connect to his community, and even distant communities, which is what makes him such a great fit to the Padres broadcasting team. It is truly exciting to see Jesse in the booth as the voice for the Padres. I cannot wait to see his journey with the San Diego Padres unfold in the time to come and blossom into what already is such an incredible experience for both him and his city. GO PADS!
